This handsome chap started the new year off on the wrong foot. Luckily, SWT/KWS Sky Vets were able to give him relief.
Last Friday, a bull was reported with a heavy limp in Tsavo East National Park. He was doing everything he could to keep weight off his front right foot — as you’ll see in the second slide, he rested on three legs alongside his bull friends, and a little while later, was seen taking a load off in the mud bath.
Our Sky Vets initiative kicked into action, flying KWS veterinarian Dr Mijele to the scene. After darting the patient, he went in to examine the source of his discomfort — and discovered that it was a puncture about four inches deep! A small silver lining is that it appeared to be from natural causes, like a sharp tree stump.
The treatment was straightforward. After cleaning out the wound, packing it with green clay, and administering antibiotics and painkillers, the patient was sent on his way. It was such a relief to see him back on all four feet, already feeling much more comfortable.
To date, SWT/KWS Mobile Vets and Sky Vets have attended to more than 3,200 elephants. Your donations make these lifesaving treatments possible — thank you!
