Can Montreal businesses survive road construction on des Pins?
•
Already, many haven’t.
•
“À LOUER” signs dot des Pins Avenue east of The Main where public renos – like replacing lead pipes, adding more trees and a bike path – are wrapping up.
•
West of St. Laurent Boulevard, where construction is in full swing, shop owners are going day by day.
•
That’s the case for florist Roger Leduc who took over his father’s shop, Florateria, in 1981.
•
With a hefty $8,000 rent due each month, he doesn’t know how long Florateria can survive.
•
The city has a grant program in place with a cap of $40,000, but no merchants CBC spoke with have received the money. They say there are too many bureaucratic hoops.
•
Leduc has to wait till the end of his fiscal year, in February, to submit his application and prove his losses to satisfy the city’s requirements.
•
CBC’s Fenn Mayes went down to chat with business owners along that stretch.
