"I’ve been a happy user of digital FX for years, but I’ve always had reservations about digital amplification. After years of trouble with rental gear for fly dates, I finally decided to hang up my stubborn “analog or die” hat and get my hands on a Line 6 Helix and see what it was all about. I’ve been using it for the last few fly dates, including the latest UK/EU tour, and after logging a good amount of actual in-the-field use, I have to say, it’s sounding and (arguably as importantly) feeling great. I was confident I could get it sounding good, but if you play tube amps enough, you’ll know they have a certain feel to them—the way the amp reacts to your playing. I wasn’t sure whether the digital versions of the amps I’m so used to would be able to replicate that, but after a decent amount of learning the ins and outs, I have it in a place where I feel really good about it. Especially in a live setting, I’d be very hard pressed to tell the difference. I’ll always have a soft spot for all things analog (I’m in the middle of building a tube amp), but with the technology coming as far as it has, the benefits of digital are impossible not to acknowledge.
