During his day job as a Spanish criminal interpreter in a small town in California, filmmaker Rodrigo Reyes met a young man named Sansón, an undocumented Mexican immigrant who was sentenced to life in prison without parole. Unable to forget this encounter, Reyes seeks Sansón out months later and the two men begin to communicate via letters, which they write to each other over years as Sansón reveals his story from the freedom of the Mexican Pacific coast to the US penitentiary system.
