A few years back, I found a box of unfinished quilts made by my maternal great grandmothers nearly 100 years ago in Michigan and Oklahoma. My mom had been saving them to repurpose into her own quilt, but she never found the right pattern for it before she passed away.
I always remember her quilting—it was the type of art she loved to make, and she was so good at it. She taught me how to sew as her quilting assistant. Of course it had to be perfect, or else she’d do it herself! But I loved her philosophy that it is always better to repurpose something than let it sit in a box.
I asked the incredible Pierretta Viktori @blackandwhitestriped to help me quilt the scraps into a dress for “The Big Reveal.” (I still am not good enough to do it myself!) Today it is one of my most special pieces in drag.
