No, this isn't a new constellation or map of brain synapses. It is a colonial radiolarian observed on the #DesigningTheFuture2 expedition. Radiolaria are found as zooplankton throughout the global ocean. Radiolarians are primarily heterotrophic (organisms that cannot produce their own food), but many have photosynthetic endosymbionts (organisms that live within the body or cells of another organism, often in a mutualistic relationship), and therefore are considered mixotrophs - an organism that can use a mix of different sources of energy and carbon. The skeletal remains of some types of radiolarians make up a large part of the cover of the ocean floor as siliceous ooze.
