Elephants are very demonstrative with their emotions. They’re fond of grand gestures to express their love, be it greeting long-absent friends with ear-splitting trumpets of delight or enveloping their nearest and dearest in trunk hugs. This is Naipoki, who we rescued from a well back in 2010. Even as a baby, she was a particularly affectionate elephant — and 13 years and one successful wild reintegration later, not much has changed! Naipoki has been living wild for several years now, as part of Edie and Mweya’s ex-orphan herd. Just before the New Year, after an absence of some 11 months, Naipoki and co. returned to Voi to visit their human-elephant family. Despite the drought, Naipoki was in fine form and looked very healthy. And yes, she is just as affectionate as ever — in the final photo, she is on the left, kissing Lentili and Eco!
