A day away from ending my first year of residency, in other words my first official year of being a doctor. I already feel that I’ve learned much, with so much more to go, but not even just from a medical standpoint but just of myself as an individual. The last few months have allowed me to be comfortable being myself with almost everyone, and I’m grateful to have had a positive rapport with so much of the nursing staff, ancillary staff, my co-residents and attendings. More and more I’ve recognized myself as a physician, and despite the highs and lows, I honestly feel blessed. A few things that I want to share for the new interns about to start their new jobs as docs and commence their own journey: Remain humble, or be humbled. I mean this not in a threatening way, but you (we) will learn that we don’t know everything, actually not a lot practically in the beginning. Experiences will remind you that you are in fact learning. Be open to that learning and feedback. It’s okay to be wrong! You’re not here to be perfect, or else you wouldn’t need to be here! Respect the nurses!! They are there at bedside, they see and know the patients, many have been working for years and have tremendous insight, learn from them! Respect yourself, recognize that even when you doubt yourself, understand that you made it here for a reason. Also even though you’re a new doctor, you ARE a doctor, embrace that and don’t think that it’s okay to be stepped on! Lean on your co residents and faculty, help is always there if you seek it, they will be like your family for the next few years! Lastly wise words from one of my senior residents through a tough time of my own, at the end of the day, this isn’t about the evals or your attending’s impression of you, it’s about YOU and YOUR PATIENT! Ensure that all that you do is for the good of your patient!
