Before the Tik-Tok trends, and before the third wave of irony-laden vintage sportswear, tracksuits, bucket hats, a vintage football shirt and some Nike Air Max meant Mel C. Thanks to Sporty Spice, and her 90s contemporaries, this look grew in popularity worldwide. It was dressed-down, easy to replicate and looked at home on the red carpet at The Brits, on stage at Wembley, or on home clothes day. It provided tomboys with a uniform for life. It didn’t just look good, it wasn’t just fashion, but it also made it cool to like sport when we were told that it belonged to boys. It allowed us to own a part of the increasingly masculine football world, and to wear our team’s colours away from matchday. Thinking about it now, it still does. So, thanks Mel C.
