For those of you who don’t know, this is what I’ve done 5 days a week for the past 13 years. I’ve always been obsessed with teeth and picking at gross things. This is a 54 year old patient who’s last dental visit was 20+ years ago. He has severe periodontal disease with generalized severe gum recession and heavy sub and supragingival calculus (the things you see me breaking off). First step is pain management. I had to give him quite a few injections since the tissue is really sensitive from all the active infection. Then I use an ultrasonic scaler to remove the hard debris before I hand scale. The machine I’m using uses oscillating sound waves to break apart hard buildup. The water it sprays it mostly to cool down the tip which gets very hot with prolonged used. The water is also a lavage which helps flush out bacteria. Total treatment time was about an hour because I’m incredibly fast. Normally this can take around 2 hours.
