In 1935, the Dartmouth Outing Club invited freshman on a “get acquainted trip” as part of the new student orientation process. Sixteen members of the Class of 1939 and a few upperclassmen leaders would partake in the event, which would later be known as the inaugural First-Year Trip. Now, the majority of the incoming class enrolls in the voluntary program, which features activities such as hiking, mountain biking, kayaking, nature photography, farming, and more. After two nights outdoors, Trips culminate in the different groups reconvening at the Moosilauke Ravine Lodge (or at the Skiway Lodge), where meals and stories are shared. Thus, First-Year Trips have come to symbolize a strong sense of community and camaraderie amongst Dartmouth students. As the Class of 2026 embarks on Trips, take a look at some pictures we have of past sessions in our Photographic Files! These images are from the mid-to-late 1980s, when the First-Year Trips program would have just celebrated its 50th anniversary. #throwbackthursday #dartmouth26s #dartmouth #dartmouthcollege #mountmoosilauke #rauner #raunerlibrary #specialcollections
