Happy (belated) 10th birthday to my sophomore Mynabirds album “GENERALS”!! It was born into the world June 5, 2012 on @saddlecreek, made by me, my brilliant friend @swiftswift (whose voice & playing I’m so grateful to have all over it), along with a host of incredible guests. I was writing to try to make sense of our warring nature, and to ask what could be done to fix the broken systems — the political ones & the emotional ones both. What I realized is that the only thing that works — sentimental as it sounds — is LOVE. When I was writing, I kept meditating on the question, “But what can we *do* to fix it?” And the night before Richard & I finished the Record, I had a dream that I climbed a mountain made of boobs, came down the other side to find a rainbow and a choir of children singing in harmony: “Love.” I started the record asking, “You wanna fix it? Or fuck it up?” and answered in the final track, “I’ve give it all for a legacy of love.” It still stands. I’m gonna spend some posts honoring the life of this record: everything it’s been & still is. In a time when so much feels overwhelming (politics, neighborhoods, general senses of collective depression), it’s important to remember our power. It’s love. It’s that simple. Please give a little to yourself, some extra to someone who knows you love them, and maybe even some love a stranger. We all need more of it. Love you ❤️
