A sweet (and short-lived!) moment between baby Nyambeni and ‘big sister’ Naleku. Naleku is really evolving as a mini matriarch, but she famously has limited patience. When Nyambeni tried to rest against her — a comforting position that mimics how she would have nursed in the wild — Naleku was initially accommodating, but quickly grew tired of her little appendage. Nyambeni is a clever girl, so she knows to take these loving moments as they come! While Naleku has always had a good head on her shoulders, she used to shamelessly play favourites with Kerrio and never showed much interest in caring for the other orphans. For her own personal growth, we hoped she would learn to become a more inclusive leader. This learning opportunity presented itself when little orphans like Nyambeni entered the fold. Naleku understood that they also needed her and really embraced the babies. We are so proud of her for stepping up, especially since she is not naturally the most nurturing elephant.
