I met many Basotho shepherds during our very brief time in Lesotho. Young men that tend to and flow with their livestock, through the mountainous and technical terrains of the country. I believe that they are mostly all young men and that their task of taking care of the animals while living out in the countryside, is part of a rite of passage.
The road network in Lesotho is also very limited and much of the country is only accessible by horse or on foot.
I have always had a sort of fear and respect for horses, but the horses in Lesotho are of exceptional strength and resilience. I rode a horse (for the first time) deep and high up into the mountains, through slippery snow and ice, and along some questionable mountain slopes.
But while the feet of the horses were doing incredible foot work and dancing about to maintain balance, I was actually none the wiser on it's back, and it was a smooth 9 hour cruise to the orphanage we were staying at.
