Normal comes from Latin, "norma," or carpenter's square. The device to determine right angles. It's funny, that the word most culturally synonymous with ideal, is equivalent to being fabricated in a shop, with a devotion to rigid sameness. We recognize that normalcy is a fallacy—and a problematic construct—and yet, it's still the direction by which we steer our ships. We want to "fit in." And yet, and yet, we also want to stand out—so long as we're just a few deviations from "the norm." For a deeper conversation on the idea, I loved my chat with the glorious @katherinemay_ , which you can find in the Pulling the Thread archives. #wordswithelise #normal
