I’m part of the 2.6%, the 2.6% of doctors that happen to be black/African American males, the 5.4% that are black/African American.
My role here will always be to serve my patients equitably, fairly, with the same compassion and decency deserved with the privilege of giving care.
However, I feel that it will always be my responsibility to do my part in increasing that 2.6%, and that 5.4% value as this system’s disparities inclusive of wage gaps, lack of diversity and lack of diversified care for patients remain prominent.
My platform on here is my own hub of sharing my journey from medicine and tidbits of my personal life, but my goal is to allow it to be a display that you CAN achieve a career in medicine as a minority, and not to let the numbers, negative faculty, or the system deter you from at least believing that you can. I want to present a visualization of what it looks like to be persistent in your dreams as well as the results of your dedication. I don’t know if what I say on here has any impact but I hope that someone will take this as a means of motivation to keep pushing, to remain confident despite setbacks, MCAT or USMLE scores and doubts, believe that you can make it because you can, you will be great AND we NEED YOU!
