Rounding off our set of posts on the interconnectedness of life on Earth, and #GAIATheory is this evocative piece entitled 'Sanctuary of the Unseen Forest' by experimental art collective Marshmallow Laser Feast. ⁠ ⁠ The installation, which debuted as part of the @barbicancentre 'Our Time on Earth' exhibition, asks viewers to see themselves as part of a collective whole with nature. ⁠ ⁠ ...⁠ ⁠ In the words of @marshmallowlaserfeast:⁠ Sanctuary of the Unseen Forest seeks to foster a sense of belonging to a more-than-human world. We are intimately connected with the trees, they can be seen as an extension of our lungs in some ways. The oxygen they exhale flows into our tree-like lungs, flowing from our heart centre outward, through fractal branching arteries to feed every cell in our body.⁠ ⁠ Natania Meeker and Antónia Szabari suggest in their seminal book Radical Botany; “as the victims of plant blindness, we are simply unable to notice plant kingdom’s liveliness; they are so different from us that we have to invent new ways of seeing and apprehending them.”⁠ ⁠ For this very reason, Sanctuary of the Unseen Forest aims a shift our daily perception by peering through the layers of the Ceiba Pentandra tree to expose the vibrant life that flows through its fractal being.⁠ ⁠ ...⁠ ⁠ If you're in London before August 29th make sure to head over to the Barbican to see this thought-provoking exhibition (which also features our 'A Biological Future for Fashion' installation).
