Starting in July of next year, public transportation will be free for those age 65 and up.
•
Montreal Mayor Valérie Plante announced the measure on Wednesday.
•
But some advocacy groups say the city should go further.
•
Jean Lalande, co-ordinator at the Welfare Rights Committee of South-West Montreal says public transit is an essential service, and it should be free for everyone — or at least more affordable for those with low incomes.
•
“Even dogs get to ride the public transit on a pilot project," Lalande said, "but we don't get so much as a pilot project for people on low income."
•
What do you think? Should public transportation be free for everyone in Montreal?
