Through their paintings, Amani Lewis (b.1994) @amanilewis_ looks to share the complex stories of those that make up their community in Baltimore. Each one of their paintings begins with a picture of their subject and from there distorts and saturates the image. Overlaying digitally manipulated photographs with vibrant layers of paint, pastel, glitter, and embroidery, Lewis challenges the often negative depictions of Blackness perpetuated in the mainstream media. Amani received their Bachelors of Fine Arts degree from the Maryland Institute College of Art. Amani lives and works in Baltimore and Miami.
