I come from an Irish family of NYPD cops. St. Patrick’s Day was always a big deal. After the parade, our entire extended family would gather for the day at Donohue’s Steak House on Lex. My cousins and I would run around and play outside while the grown-ups held court in the restaurant. Throughout the day and into the night, more and more friends and family would join until the place was swollen with revelers. At some point, my father would raise a glass and make a toast to remind us of the great Emerald Island we came from, how difficult it was for our family to get here, how much more difficult it was once they washed up on these shores... and how thankful we are for how far we’ve come.
