What blows your hair back? Makes your eyes light up? And are you, we, our society getting enough of that feeling? A few years back my friend @scalesnate and I were talking about mountain sports, motorcycles, and life, and he asked that question. I think about it every day. We're told to "play it safe," get good if mind-numbing jobs, be responsible, plan for retirement, plan for kids, plan out our lives, plan out our deaths, avoid risk, avoid excess, avoid being selfish. Yet our rates of overdose, mental illness, stress-caused heart and other disease, alienation, suicide, etc., are through the roof. Maybe the key to the good life isn't all about being safe and planning to die rich. Maybe it's about doing shit that blows your hair back regularly. Maybe the feeling of wind in your hair, waking up like a kid on a sunny Saturday morning with the world out the door just waiting to be grabbed, maybe, just maybe, we all need more time with some big-ass grins on our faces doing nothing commercially useful but personally essential, just doing exactly what makes us feel deeply alive and engaged.
We all know when we're around someone who is living their best life: There's a sparkle in their eyes, whether it's my dog running for all she's worth in tall grass, or my kids being kids, or my friends and I climbing around on icicles, a mom sneaking in a run. Those moments give us energy, space, clarity, peace, stoke, and after we can go home and be good parents, make our jobs better, bring some fire into the world instead of having it slowly snuff ours. I believe that time spent with a big smile on your face and hair flying is absolutely vital to a meaningful life. Thanks Nate, and all of you I've had the pleasure of feeling the rush of life with, in big and small ways. Yeah! May we all get a few moments with our hair straight back in some way today!
@jason_gulley_science and I climbing back into the light and out of a very large hole in the Greenland Ice Sheet, @christianpondella shot. On this trip we definitely got our hair blown back, but also learned a little more about the Greenland ice sheet. Which, for me, blows me hair back big time! @iceclimbing, @redbullcanada
