Guyana lived up to the hype. Before I ever even dreamed of going there, I was told stories of shooting in its jungles and rainforests from friends who had done so in the past. They told me about grueling conditions in the rainy season, a constant state of general wetness that proved to be brutal for film production. The swarms of mosquitoes and tiny biting flies that make you feel like you are losing your mind. Your boots, socks and clothes are so wet all of the time that getting trench foot is easy. The two-mile driving commutes that turn into multiple-hour struggles through the mud, rivers and floodplains. The air that is hot and humid all day and night. Your body sweats so much that your skin is constantly moist, and you always smell bad. They also told me about the exotic plants and animals. The astonishing misty sunrises and sunsets over the rainforest mountains. The constant hum of a jungle teeming with life, especially at night- a chorus of a thousand different sounds. The moonlight savanna plains under starry skies that light up with millions of fireflies. Of course, they also told me about the wonderful people that inhabit such a peculiar place. Well, after two months there, I can confirm all of the above. Guyana is a truly wild place, one of the most extraordinary countries that I have ever been to. I am looking forward to returning for the next adventure.
