Swiss sport brand ‘On’ continues to push the edges of material innovation leaving mega brands like Nike and Adidas behind. Today @on_running revealed ‘Cloudprime’ the first performance running shoe made from carbon emissions. It’s been a mammoth, multi-year, research project that required the creation of an entirely new supply chain. Partners included LanzaTech, who use a natural bacteria found in rabbit droppings to transform pollution into a biochemical for making materials like polyester, or in this case the ingredient needed to produce the EVA foam for the shoe's midsole. And it's not just the soles that make use of carbon, the polyester in the upper is also made from emissions. The fabric is a result of a collaboration between On and French start-up @Fairbrics.co whose technology uses a catalytic, rather than a biological, process to transform the emissions. This level of innovation requires extreme tenacity and resilience: “It has been emotional – the most intense project I ever worked on,” said Nils Altrogge, On’s Head of Technology Innovation. “There were times when I had tears in my eyes, I was so frustrated,” he admits. “But we never stopped believing we could find solutions. The next day, I would wake up, everything would look better, and we’d go again.” The initial 5 pairs of shoes are currently being tested by elite athletes with the ambition of producing 5 million pairs in the near future.
