My mind has been so overwhelmed with the tragedies going on that it’s taken me forever to articulate what I’ve been feeling about all of this. It deeply saddens me that as we end AAPI x Mental Health Month and celebrate the progress we’ve made with charitable events like @identitylafest this weekend, we’re faced with the grim reality that there is still so much injustice perpetuated against POC, ESPECIALLY against African-Americans, in this country. I understand that we can never COMPLETELY understand the struggles that oppressed groups face unless we are a part of that oppressed group ourselves. I understand that I can do better, you can do better, and we all can do better to call out injustice, work towards societal progress, and reexamine how we can be better allies to each other. #GeorgeFloyd #SayHisName
There are some amazing people I wanted to initially highlight simply as some personal AAPI heroes of mine that have served their communities for decades and have been immensely helpful and caring mentors to me. But given the circumstances, I want to also send them love for being conscientious of issues that affect not only Asian Americans but any POC groups that have suffered injustices. Thank you @kirbylee213 and @danakadan for your insights and your willingness to think deeply about so many different issues. Missing @prohfm @itsdpd and @kevnishfm (we really need a group photo together haha) but the same goes for all of you. I cannot express enough the level of respect and appreciation I have for how freely you impart your wisdom and insight to others, and how you’ve all chosen to use your voices and your platforms to do good for the community. Thank you for walking the walk and truly committing to ideals that, in my opinion, everyone should strive to commit to as well. #OurAAPIHeroes
