Having returned to Provence making the rounds seeing my friends, a common question asked is, “How was the United States?” For me, the states are the states. It’s where I’m from, it’s what I know. I don’t register observations but rather, pickup on old familiarities. However, there is something that has stuck out for me after spending so many weeks in the US upon reentry into France... the smell! The smell of the hot earth, the smell of a babbling brook, the smell of onions and garlic sautéing, of a vineyard at sunset, the smell of grapes fermenting. You can actually smell the change in the air. Yesterday’s harvest smells like tomorrow’s wine.
I immediately immersed myself into nature. I love how winemaker Natalie Milan of @domaineMilan describes the landscape, especially the one I foraged for everything you see in this photograph, as pregnant. The land is pregnant and it smells like LIFE.
An honor to create this photograph for @domainemilan’s 2022 Pinot Noir wine label 🍇
