#funfactfriday: Did you know that ten consecutive Dartmouth classes helped to build Bartlett Tower?
138 years ago, President Samuel Colcord Bartlett proposed the establishment of a medieval-style tower “as a landmark more enduring than the Old Pine.” The project commenced with the Class of 1885, who assembled the foundation for the structure in College Park. Each successive class was expected to contribute to the tower’s development by adding 10 feet to its height annually; this was to be done until it stood 80 feet tall! However, students often struggled to meet this prerequisite, resulting in multiple classes contracting masons.
The Class of 1895 was the final undergraduate group to work on the tower, denoting its completion with the installation of a copper roof. In the end, the building was shy of its goal, measuring at 71 feet tall. The tower would later be dedicated to President Bartlett in 1915, and remains a popular place to visit on campus today.
