The unique object ‘Thieves’ by Laurids Gallée is right now being showed at Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam as a part of the exhibition 'When things are beings’. ‘Thieves’ was originally created for the exhibition ‘Fireworks etc.’ showed at TABLEAU last year. The exhibition is curated by @brittesloothaak & @amandapinatih who says: ‘Thieves’ was originally made for the exhibition ‘Fireworks etc.’ showed at TABLEAU last year. 'Thieves by designer Laurids Gallée pushes boundaries: the boundaries of materials and the boundaries between functional design and figurative sculpture. His artistic practice takes the form of a contemporary reflection on historical applied arts, in which he adapts and applies the traditional craft of Austrian hand-painted folk furniture-making. This freestanding shelf unit depicts a flock of birds mid-flight, as if captured in a snapshot of a fairytale. The rest of the narrative—where the birds came from, what they are fleeing, or where they are going—is left unknown. Gallée draws inspiration from bemalte Bauernmöbel, a type of traditional Austrian hand-painted folk furniture that the artist first encountered at his grandparents’ home. Rather than simply ornamenting items of furniture, however, he makes objects whose contours are integrated into the illustration. The images are so dynamic that they look like they might at any moment start moving and take off into the air—in a powerful contrast with the solid wood from which they are made. Gallée uses traditional iconography to hint playfully at historical allegories, leaving the viewer feeling they have experienced a fairytale.' You can still find his pieces online at our webshop.
