Over a year ago I was deep in anguish and frustration about the ongoing hate crimes lobbed at the Asian community, and fearful especially for the safety of our sisters and aunties. I came across the incredible work of filmmaker Jia Li, and was immediately drawn to the intimate portraits she draws of her subjects, often about the AAPI Community. Suddenly I was thinking about how we've never really seen anything in the media about the seamstresses who work in our fashion industry, who make up the backbone of the garment district, basically our frontline responders during the pandemic. I reached out to Jia and from there, hatched the idea of INVISIBLE SEAMS, a documentary short about the lives of 8 Asian women in various parts of the garment industry in New York. They are our invisible seams, holding together the foundation of a garment, but never really seen. These women have made everything - from outfits for Michelle Obama to the fiercest looks walking down the Met Gala red carpet! This film is about celebrating the lives of these incredible women, their stories, and their craft, without whom our industry would not be what it is today. We are proud to be soft-launching this film today on Vimeo (LINK IN BIO) - if you have fifteen minutes to catch it, please have a watch and let me know what you think! Thank you so much to Yaqi, Nay, Joy, Lorraine, Fanny, Inni, Liangqin and Ai Qin for so generously sharing your precious stories with us, and congratulations to the team at Hi-Lo for putting this together. And of course to Jia - for bringing our vision to such vivid life. This is for our Grandmas, our Aunties and our Sisters. It's a labour of love and I can't wait for you to see it and share with your communities! #Invisibleseamsdoc #GarmentIndustry #Fashion #NewYorkGarmentDistrict #NewYorkFashion #InvisibleSeams #DocumentaryShort #NewYorkImmigrants #aapiwomenlead #GarmentIndustry #MadeinNewYork #InvisibleSeams #制衣的背后
