KABALA WEST / NARIYA PEOPLE OF KADUNA STATE: WHERE DID WE GET IT WRONG POLITICALLY? An Open Letter to the Government of Kaduna State For more than five years, the people of Kabala West and Nariya have lived with an unsettling question that refuses to go away: Where did we get it wrong politically? This question has become unavoidable when we consider the prolonged abandonment of the Kabala West / Nariya Road Project, despite countless appeals, letters, and peaceful engagements with government authorities. The road was awarded, construction commenced, and then without explanation everything stopped. Five years later, nothing has changed. What makes this situation even more painful is the contrast we see daily around us. Roads such as Zango Road, Asibitin Yara Road and Ungwan Muazu were recently initiated and, within a short span of two to three months, they are either completed or nearing completion. See Abandoned Kabala West road and the ongoing Zango Road/Musawa Roundabout road construction pictures attached. These ongoing projects show that government has the capacity, resources, and efficiency to deliver when it chooses to do so. The natural question then arises: Why not Kabala West and Nariya? Are we not part of Kaduna State? Do our children not breathe the same air? Do our traders not pay taxes? Do our votes not count? Kabala West and Nariya are not obscure settlements. They are vibrant parts of Kaduna metropolis, home to thousands of law-abiding, peace-loving residents who contribute daily to the economic and social life of the State. Yet, for over five years, we have been made to endure dust, health risks, business losses, and daily humiliation on a road that should have been completed long ago. Our patience has been tested. During harmattan, dust blankets the entire community. Children walk to school coughing; elderly residents struggle with respiratory illnesses; vehicles break down; transporters avoid the route; and businesses continue to shut their doors. Still, we have chosen dialogue over protest, hope over hostility. This brings us back to the painful question: did we get it wrong politically? Is development now determined by how vocal a community is? By political alignment? By proximity to power? Or by how much pressure a community can exert? If roads can be completed elsewhere within months, then five years of abandonment in Kabala West and Nariya cannot be justified. Silence from government on this issue feels like a quiet admission that some communities matter more than others. This letter is not written in anger. It is written in frustration, disappointment, and a sincere desire to be heard. We still believe in governance that is fair, inclusive, and responsive. But belief must be reinforced by action. All we ask is simple and just: resume and complete the Kabala West / Nariya Road Project. Nothing more. Nothing special. Just fairness. Until that happens, the people of Kabala West and Nariya will continue to ask peacefully but persistently: Where did we get it wrong politically? M.B Yusuf, Esq,.
