Braden Hollis (b. 1998) @bootlegballerina born and raised in Los Angeles is a painter and filmmaker. Hollis’ paintings reference things she dreams up, emotions she has felt and stories she overhears and gathers. People are often captured alone, in pairs and trios, mid motion against blue skies. Her subjects are participating in leisure activities or competitions. No matter the game they are playing or the stance they take; the subjects’ represent an attempt at self- actualization. Honoring black subjectivity and individuality, and the interior lives of black people is also central to her work. Hollis is guided by what can be learned from careful observation and solitude. Her current body of work explores the overlooked history of black owned leisure and vacations sites along the California coast at the turn of the 20th century. Braden studied at Andrew Mellon Curatorial Academy at LACMA, Los Angeles, CA and received her BFA from The Cooper Union, New York, NY.
Currently on view at SIAB, presented by Anthony Gallery in partnership with Rebuild Foundation.
