Well, no hiding now: today the the episode of the excellent @jimmychin Edge of the Unknown series launches on @disneyplus with @natgeotv, and one of the closest calls I've ever experienced goes out to millions. I've been feeling mixed about this day; I think it's important to share our near-misses, but this one still haunts me. I'll have a really great day and then think, "Wow, if I'd died at Helmcken I wouldn't have had this day." The immediate experience of hanging hundreds of feet above the ground on an open carabiner ended when I clipped it back in, but it's never gone. I didn't talk very much about it initially because I was scared, ashamed, horrified at my own error; I'm a professional athlete, guide, rigger, and I have spent thousands of days on ropes. But there I was, hanging off a GriGri that had randomly stuck in the notch of an open carabiner gate. Like all mistakes, it was obvious in hindsight, but what really scared the shit out of me is that I couldn't come up with a full-proof, "This will never happen again" system. Which meant it could. Which is a truth colder than the -35 mist at Helmcken. I admire the hell out of @jimmychin for using his position to share not just the bright and glamorous side of the sports we love. This series dives into the minds and tough experiences of many of my friends and colleagues from my adventure career, often for the first time publicly. This needs to happen more. The team at Helmcken kept me going day after day, somehow kept us all going together. Without them I would have quit; the route in this film is the hardest thing I've ever done in my life, and it was only possible thanks to Sarah, John, Katie, and everyone else there. We grew into some place beyond resiliency, and it changed all of us going forward. As always, a huge thanks to them, and also to @timemmett for the stoke to go in there for the first time.
