SheATL tech starts today! We’re back at 7Stages with @sheatlarts, my co-producer-collaborator-best-friend @feistyyfemme, and our fearless leader @danielle.de.matteo from Sept 3-7! Plays are time capsules. They remind us that there is never just one way to exist in this world, in this time. My mission as an artist and producer is to preserve the stories of femme, trans, and non-binary playwrights. As truth is erased from our museums, health agencies, and memorials, that mission has become more urgent than ever. Preservation isn’t having a hard copy tucked away somewhere. It’s about sharing stories when we need them most, with the audiences who need them most—so they are tucked in our collective hearts, carried through our actions, and nurtured in our relationships. This week, four teams will share stories that unravel the assumptions we make about history and lift the veil concealing generations of resistance. Told through the ever-radical lens of young femmes/enbys coming of age, these plays reimagine both past and future: * A young woman’s future is safeguarded by a multi-generational secret passed down through her grandmother. * Southern queerness and togetherness: “While there are many spaces filled with hate, there are also places filled with love and community.” * Young people trying to find their family in The End and finding each other “as the worlds they once knew—and the promises they made—unravel” * A magical story that empowers first-generation Latinas to unapologetically reimagine what their life could be like, “Ahorita & always, aunque they try to erase history.” These four shows will unveil our history and boldly speculate on our future.
