From lizards on a rock to mothers running amok, baby Wimbi has it all under control!
Elephants have different parenting styles. Some are hyper-vigilant, others take a more hands-off approach. Wendi falls firmly into the latter category — in fact, she takes it to the extreme! It’s always been Wendi’s world; we just live in it. Even after having three daughters, she is still the centre of her universe.
When Wendi is feeling wayward, her friends and eldest calf, Wiva, step in. In October, she gave birth to her third daughter, named Wimbi. Head Keeper Benjamin marvels at how self-sufficient Wimbi already is. She doggedly trails her mother’s every step, giving her no option but to look after her!
Here, Wendi (at the far right of the frame) briefly abandoned Wimbi for a more enticing pile of lucerne. Unperturbed, Wimbi took a little walk about, said hello to a lizard sunning on a rock, and determinedly marched over to her mother’s side. One way or another, she will teach Wendi how to parent!
Wendi’s story encapsulates all we try to achieve through our Orphans’ Project. Although she never knew her own family, she still grew up to have the rich, wild life every elephant deserves. Now, she is raising her own daughters (with a little help!), just as nature intended.
