One of my fav ways to activate the core is holding a bear plank. Then try lifting one hand at a time and one foot at a time without anything shifting. Eventually you can try one hand and opposite foot at the same time. For those with DR, I recommend trying this just on all fours until you feel your core is strong enough for the hover.
