black history month has been co-opted by the state and only emphasizes black political figures that have been sanitized. reformists not revolutionaries. radicals and political prisoners will largely go unnoticed. the white media apparatus will sell us images of pain and “triumph” while biden funnels more resources into police departments across the country. white and black audiences will sit at home and click through the “black collection” on streaming platforms hoping to find the inspiration needed to continue to believe in the myth of progress. and in the shadows, black mothers will to bury their children. justice is a punchline. as long as the united states exists, we should view this month as a reminder that our work is not finished. i believe in what my ancestors believed in. the destruction of capitalism and imperialism. revolution.
