"How can local color influence and inspire the design process of Fijian artisans?" asks @mimirobin, the #2022Folklife Festival's Artisan Engagement Manager.
During a recent trip to Fiji, Robinson worked with a group of craftswomen to observe and document the geography of local color, which deeply informs @rise_beyond_the_reef_fiji's products and designs. Unsurprisingly, a hundred shades of green emerged from tropical plants such as Breadfruit, Mangrove, and the Bua flower.
Robinson elaborates on her collaborations: "Color is one way we can understand and interpret the world around us. When creating products, we always start by getting grounded in place. This often means looking up, looking out, and looking down to notice all the colors and textures of the natural environment. We're always stunned by the diversity of shades and hues within one color, like green. From initial ideation to final creation, all of Rise's designs are rooted in place, which is beautiful to witness and partake in."
