Clear and Present OPENING 23 October, 3–5pm Analog Diary presents Clear and Present, a group show exploring the ongoing legacy of the Light and Space movement. In the 1960s, a loosely affiliated group of artists in Los Angeles began to engage unexpected media – namely polymers, like resin and acrylic – as they drew inspiration from the sprawling city's expansive skies, and from phenomena observed at surf spots in Venice Beach and Dana Point. Concerns pertaining to color, density, form, and mass prevailed, and these material experiments lead to a highly refined aesthetic which burst apart precedents established by California Minimalist painters and the Pop movement. Leading with perceptual play and finely-tuned form, works by the Light and Space artists have had an immense and lasting influence on generations of artists to come. In Clear and Present, we explore this ongoing dialogue. Artists: Peter Alexander, Larry Bell, Liz Deschenes, Alteronce Gumby, Ann Veronica Janssens, Helen Pashgian, Alyson Shotz, Maya Stovall.
