Did you know that Southern Africa contains one of the world's great repositories of rock art? Swipe through to see these amazing paintings, drawings, engravings, stencils, and prints on stone that are all examples of rock art. This ancient rock art is now at risk due to development, tourism, and climate change. To protect the rock art, in 2005 Getty began organizing workshops for local heritage professionals with the help of Southern African organizations. Workshop attendees learned about preservation, conservation, low-impact approaches to tourism, and management of these at-risk sites. Through the education efforts of the Southern African Rock Art Project (SARAP), the number of people helping to protect the region's rich cultural heritage has grown, ensuring we can enjoy this rock art for many more millennia.
