“All the artists in the exhibition are Black female or non binary, so there’s also an intentional curatorial choice to move away from the traditional white male gaze (which has previously captured Black women). The exhibition is envisioning what the legacy of the Black woman would look like if she was in control of that legacy herself.”

‘BLACK VENUS’ Curated by Aindrea Emelife explores the deep history surrounding the portrayal of Black women in visual culture — from fetishized, colonial-era caricatures, to the present-day reclamation of the rich complexity of Black womanhood. This extensive collection of works from diverse perspectives and varying moments in time sheds light on the Black female experience, while celebrating Black beauty and womanhood.
On view until August 21st, ‘BLACK VENUS’ spans decades of creation, allowing audiences to look back and appreciate how far Black women have come.
