📚📚📚Feels like time for another bedside table round-up... all non-wine for now as I pause on the geeking a bit:
- I have had a few people highlight Headshot to me - and it’s been really widely well reviewed... unfortunately my enjoyment of it was marred totally by the lack of research that had gone into the boxing - the length of the rounds, the number of rounds, the mechanics, scoring... and missed nuance through that oversight. It’s a shame, because I think the concept is great - but so much more could have been done. If you want to read a book about fighting though...
- READ THE LONGSHOT! this is brilliant. Filled with all the nuance Headshot lacks - an MMA fight rather than boxing, but loved diving into the trainer/fighter relationship, and the psychology around a big fight. Immersive and gripping.
- it was so good it has inspired me to try and read everything by @_katiekitamura - only one more to go and I would urge you to read Intimacies and A Separation, both so different and dark and hard to put down.
- Dear Mrs Bird - light, easy, fine for a beach (wasted on England in my case, alas)
- a brilliant loan from @l.u.c.y91 on Living Danishly. A surprisingly powerful, uplifting, inspiring and fascinating look at how other, happier peoples live.
- and last but not least - Colson Whitehead. Starting the Underground Railroad now - but this was highlighted on a podcast I listened to, and I loved it. Vividly descriptive and moving.
Feels like I’m on a run of great books at the moment and I don’t want it to stop. Ping me any reccs 👀
