If you’ve been following any of the goings on at fashion week - you may have caught this moment @coperni’s SS23 show in Paris. ⁠ ⁠ Model @bellahadid had a dress sprayed onto her body live on the runway. A moment of pure fashion theater that was created using Fabrican, a company founded (in 2003) on the ground-breaking research of Dr Manel Torres (@manelfabrican). ⁠ ⁠ Anyone who knows their fashion history will recognise that this is not this innovation’s first outing. In fact, our founder Suzanne Lee wrote about Manel’s research almost 20 years ago (!) in her book ‘Fashioning the Future: tomorrow’s wardrobe’ (published by @thamesandhudson) And the idea of sprayable fabric goes even further back: ⁠ “Once the sewing machine has been replaced or sophisticated, once a designer can spray-on clothes or transmigrate fabrics to the body, new things will happen...The designer will become less artist, more technician. He’ll be like an architect or engineer, with a sound background in chemistry.” (Rudi Gernreich, 1971) ⁠ ⁠ A spray-on dress wasn’t the only innovation that Suzanne’s book predicted for fashion, it covers ideas including fermented spider silk and lab-grown leather.
