Sony tools of the trade 2022 edition.
I get a lot of questions about gear so thought it may be useful to give a super brief rundown of how I use each bit of kit. Feel free to ask questions in the comments about any item here and I can give you a more detailed answer. I don’t think this will all fit in the caption, so I’ll put the remainder in the first pinned comment.
Shoutout to @sonyalpha.anz for being the most innovative company in mirrorless cameras. I’ve been shooting Sony mirrorless since 2015 and they’ve always been the market leaders.
A7IV – In my opinion the best all round camera Sony make. I use it for most general shooting. Also an epic hybrid cam for both stills and video.
A7RIV – My go to for shooting surf. I’m aiming for these images to be large format prints, so the 62MP is perfect.
A7RIV – I have spare so I can have one setup in my housing and the other to shoot from land.
A7RIII – My old go to, it’s super beat up, but we’ve had a lot of good times together so I don’t want to let it go.
A7SIII – We use this as a dedicated video body. Footage is amazing and video focus is unreal. Elke uses this more than me cause she’s more into video than I am.
24mm f/1.4 – I don’t really like the look of photos shot below 50mm, so I don’t use this much. Mostly just for first dance at wedding shoots.
1.4x teleconverter – I don’t shoot much tight surf action, so generally only add the converter for moon shots.
2x teleconverter – When I want a reaaaaally big moon I chuck this on the 200-600mm
55mm f/1.8 – I have a lot of love for this lens. It’s compact and amazingly sharp, but now I have the 50mm f/1.2 I rarely use this one.
85mm f/1.8 – I got this to shoot in the water as my f/1.4 wouldn’t fit in my port. But then I worked out how to fit the f/1.4 in my port.
12-24mm f/4.0 – Personally I think anything shot this wide looks gross so I’ll use this lens about once a year for half/half split shots with a dome port in the water.
90mm macro f/2.8 – This is a fun lens to shoot with in the water. Being able to focus closer looks rad and can make an out of focus sun look huge.
