1928, when there was a bridge over Newtown Creek that connected Vernon Ave in Long Island City to Manhattan Ave in Greenpoint. According to @nyc.beforeandafter constructed in 1905, "during its years of operation the Vernon Avenue Bridge supported automobile, streetcar, and pedestrian traffic. The bridge also would open up to allow ship traffic to pass through Newtown Creek, which was then a bustling industrial canal. By the 1950’s, the Vernon Avenue Bridge was seen as small, old, and obsolete, and so the city took the decision to demolish the structure in 1954 and replace it with a larger and more modern bridge. That replacement bridge - known as the Pulaski Bridge - is still in operation to this day and is located a block east of the Vernon Bridge’s former site." //Reposted from @nyc.beforeandafter #tb 1928 & today: Looking north on Manhattan Ave from Commercial St in Greenpoint, Brooklyn. . Both photos show a view looking north across Newtown Creek and toward Long Island City, Queens. Whilst the industrial building on the left still stands, the major difference between the photos is in the complete absence of the bridge seen in the 1928 scene. That bridge was known as the Vernon Avenue Bridge; its name deriving from Vernon Avenue, the road across Newtown Creek on the Queens side. . #greenpoint #brooklyn #manhattanave #1920snyc #thewaywewere #oldnyc #newtowncreek #greenpointbrooklyn #nychistory #oldnewyork #nyc1920s #brooklynnyc #longislandcity #vernonblvd #roaring20s #oldbridge #bklyn #vintagenewyork #1920sstyle #belgianblock #brooklynhistory #20s #nycnostalgia #manhattanavenue #greenpointbk #1920s #vintagenyc #brooklynny #greenpointers
