To ensure an equitable and functional economy, all working people must have equal rights to labor protections, access to social protections, and the opportunity to shape the policies and systems that affect their lives. As COVID-19 continues to sweep the globe and cost many workers their jobs, benefits, and, at times, their health, it’s clear that this vision is far from reality. Informal workers—street vendors, domestic workers, waste pickers, and more—have all been disproportionately exposed not just to the virus, but to injustice and economic ruin. But, thanks to the invaluable work of Women in Informal Employment: Globalizing & Organizing, informal workers everywhere are demanding and gaining the pay, benefits, and protections they deserve.
