Aleutian Islands, 2013 About 10 years ago now, I stood on a remote point in a chain of islands off the tip of Alaska that stretched across the Bering sea, boulders tumbling with every set that rolled in, so loud that I had no chance of communicating or directing the surfers I intended to photograph. The only thing I could do was to capture the moment as it unfolded...but in this case, I had a card up my sleeve. The surfers were my friends, I knew their style, how they would approach the section of a wave, and I knew the sport from years of shooting for surfline and spending time in the ocean myself. I often encourage younger photographers to do the sport you want to photograph, immerse yourself in it, give a piece of yourself to it and it shows in your work. If you can’t, talk to someone who does and learn what matters to them, the moments that they want to have on their wall. I’ll never forget the feeling walking away from that day in the Aleutians, knowing the previous hours were a defining point in my career, my life...truly special. #SonyArtisan #SonyPartner Shot on @sonyalpha NEX-7 / 16-50mm f/3.5 Tech specs: Shutter: 1/640 ISO: 100 Aperture: f/4
