"The Chicano mural movement has really been about creating a cultural geography in places where we could not afford to own the property but we could take the visual life into our own hands" - artist Juana Alicia (@juana_alicia) on the Mission Muralismo Movement
In our "Mission Muralismo Audio Zine - Volume I" the artist discusses her experience painting her mural "Las Lechugueras" in San Francisco's Mission District. When she couldn't secure funding from the city to restore "Las Lechugueras," she took advantage of having first rights to destroy the mural so that she could create a new one. She then painted "La Llorona Sacred Waters" in its place. See it on the East side of York and 24th St. in the Mission District.
