In 2002, the Smithsonian Folklife Festival brought two memorable modes of transportation to the National Mall representing the Silk Road: camels and a Pakistani “jingle truck.” The camels went back to their home in Texas, but the brilliantly painted and adorned truck went to a Smithsonian storage facility in Maryland, exposed to the elements for the next twenty years.
This May, a new owner acquired the truck—after we kept a few parts for our office collection—and hopes to restore it to its former glory with the help of the original creator, famed @truck_artist Haider Ali. For now it’s parked at her home in New Jersey, but she dreams of starting a Pakistani truck art village for all to enjoy.
See more photos, read the history, and watch a video of the truck’s departure in the Festival Blog (link in bio).
