We want this project to be part of a new blueprint [for] dealing with contentious historical works, potentially controversial contemporary works, and letting the museum do what a museum should do - be an organic place that provides context that is also constantly evolving along with the work inside of it. re:mancipation is a collaborative project with the Chazen Museum of Art (University of Wisconsin-Madison) @chazenartuw, myself, and MASK Consortium @MASKConsortium. Using the "Emancipation Group" sculpture (which depicts President Abraham Lincoln standing over a kneeling Black "freedman") as the focal point, re:mancipation is creating bold new concepts and tools to explore, understand and discuss American art, history and racism.
