For anyone who has asked me what that abomination of a guitar hanging at Past, Present and FutureNever is that looks like a Marshall Stack, this is for you. My favourite music movie of all time is ‘This Is Spinal Tap’. This is the actual guitar used by Nigel Tufnel and I bought it via an auction around the Diorama era. It was way overpriced, sounds like absolute shit and I will NEVER regret buying it. Taken from an article about this rare piece of rock history. “This Marshall Stack Guitar is one of only two ever made, and was once featured on the cover of Guitar World magazine. The body is a replica of a full Marshall Stack with a detachable bottom half for quieter, studio work. It has a Jackson neck and Seymour Duncan pickup. It is a fully functional working instrument personally used by Nigel Tufnel during some of Spinal Tap's most memorable tours. Volume and tone knobs all go to 11. This guitar was Nigel's mainstay for many European shows. When asked why this was, Nigel replied, "Well, it's got a very Scandinavian look about it, doesn't it?"” Nigel is my favourite member of Spinal Tap, I was inspired by his desire to break his rock n roll shackles and explore a more cultured exploration of music, so much so that this is my favourite quote from the movie as Nigel sits at a piano and describes a piece he is working on. “Well, it's part of a trilogy, a musical trilogy that I'm doing in D minor, which I always find is really the saddest of all keys, really, I don't know why. It makes people weep instantly to play ... I'm really influenced by Mozart and Bach, and it's sort of in between those, really. It's like a Mach piece, really.” Sitting here now thinking about it, I can’t help but think that Spinal Tap is partly responsible for Diorama 😂 Catch this guitar and other antiquities of the six-stringed variety at Past, Present and FutureNever only at the @rialtomelbourne until Dec 23.
