‘To be in a symbiotic relationship means to be in a constant state of flow. It’s essentially an equal balance of giving and taking from each partner, whether this relates to a romantic relationship, a close friend or a family member. Problems/ arguments/ kicking and screaming, usually manifest when one partner takes too much and gives too little in return or vice-versa. To maintain equality in our relationship, we must strive to achieve balance. As in any other area of your life, awareness is the key, as is mutual respect. Being unbalanced in this way can be super destructive. There’s only so much you will give before you are ready to receive, and not having that energy returned is more than enough to break any relationship - lover, friend or even family member. It’s imperative that for our self-worth and self-love, we stand up for ourselves when we are feeling defeated like this. Similarly, entertaining this kind of behaviour isn’t doing the person behaving in this way any favours; it’s doing more damage than good because, more often than not, that person is unconscious that they’re acting in this way and over time, it becomes natural to them, and the taking or giving becomes second nature to you...’ That is a small sample from the first week of the course on equality.
